Publico Street Bistro & Garden

Publico

Doesn’t it seem like everytime you turn a new corner in South Boston you notice something that wasn’t there before? Queue Publico. Tucked away under some of Southie’s newest luxury apartments on Dorchester Street, Publico does not disappoint. Compared to some of the larger restaurants in the area, the scene is not overpowered by those looking for a bar scene. Since opening its doors last week, whispers around Southie have quickly gained this spot popularity.

The décor is modern and fresh, and the space is large but not overwhelming. Warmer months will allow patrons to enjoy the outdoor courtyard, equipped with full bar, a lounge area with fire pits, and plenty of dining tables. The horseshoe bar inside is the perfect place to grab a quick drink or dinner after work. The Market Day cocktail was perfectly mixed by the friendly and professional bartender. All of the staff were knowledgeable and happy to make recommendations for both food and drink.

Though my party did not partake, every entrée that passed by looked phenomenal. We chose to stick with the left side of the menu and sampled a number of the smaller plates. We started with the Bacalao Fritters, a perfect serving of deep fried salt cod in green olive tapenade and aioli. Having never tried salt cod before, I was skeptical. Not usually one for salty snacks, these fritters served up just the right amount of flavor. The rib-eye tartare tacos arrived in a tiny shell and were bursting with crunch and flavor. My personal favorite was the Mais Crepe. Pictured below, the fluffy crepe was overflowing with a deliciously sweet corn mousse. The sliced peppers added the perfect amount of kick to balance out the sweet flavors of the crepe and mousse.

Come summer time, this is sure to be a favorite spot for everyone who loves to dine al fresco. Get there before the rest of Southie does!
