Pizza=Love
There are usually two big competitors that come to mind when
talking pizza in Boston, Pizzeria Regina in the North End and Santarpio’s in
East Boston. This is my bid to throw a third contender in the mix. Nestled in
the heart of Roslindale, MA. The Pleasant Cafe has been serving its community
hot pies since opening its doors in 1937. For all of you pizza snobs out there,
dine in for your first experience. The pizza is best enjoyed table-side and
straight from the oven. Pleasant offers one size of their thin crust delights
with a variety of simple toppings. The dough is made in house, covered in their
original sauce and three-cheese blend, followed by a bake in their brick oven. Whether
you like to get creative with your toppings, or stick with a classic cheese
Pleasant Cafe will not disappoint.
A perfect meal for me at my favorite neighborhood jaunt is a
half cheese, half pepper and onion pie, one of their generously portioned Greek
salads, and finally a heaping pile of delicious French fries accompanied by the
most amazing sweet and sour sauce in the game (also used for pizza dipping). And
if I’m really feeling wild, I wash it all down with their very own bottled root
beer. If soda is not your thing, not to worry. They over 70 different beer and
wines, as well as a full bar. Leftover pizza travels well and in my opinion
tastes best straight from the fridge.
This neighborhood institution serves up daily specials and
fresh pizzas seven days a week. It’s great for dates, great for families, and
offers a private room with space for parties of up to 30 people. The takeaway
service is always a flawless experience. Friday and Saturday nights are usually
cranking, so make sure to allot ample time between call in and pick up. The prices
here cannot be beat. A plain cheese pizza rings in at $10.75 and you will not
find an entree upwards of $16. They are famous for the prime rib special, which
is so good they serve it up several days a week.
The décor is old school. Nevertheless, as the old saying
goes, if it isn’t broke, don’t fix it. The staff is incredibly friendly and you
can always count on a smile as soon as you walk in the door. They’ve been doing
it right for so long, that the experience is seamless and the service is always
on point. The booths in the restaurant side are comfy and the bar side offers plenty
of seating if you’re looking to eat and catch a game. The no frills atmosphere
lets the food be the focus, and as a result, they never miss a beat. Let the
Pleasant charm you, and see how quickly you become a regular among all the
other familiar faces.
